The biggest advantage of staying at Hobas Lodge or Camp, is that you are
already within the conservation area, and one can view the sunrise and the
sunset over the canyon. Those staying outside the park, must wait until
sunrise before the gate opens, and then there is still another 10km to drive
to the viewpoint at the canyon. Also, the gate closes at sunset, which means
you must leave the viewpoint before sunset to be in time before closure.
FISH RIVER HIKING TRAIL
A mere 10km away from the main viewpoint over the Fish River Canyon, this
is the best place to stay if you want to be close to the start of the Fish
River Canyon Hike. Enjoy dinner in the restaurant on site, accompanied by
a drink at the bar and get a good night's rest before you start the challenging
hike in the morning.
Shuttles are available from Hobas to the starting point of the hike. Transfers
to and from Ai-Ais can also be arranged, depending on where you leave your
vehicle for the duration of your hike. After completion, you can overnight
either at Ai-Ais Resort or you can return to where you started from.
FISH RIVER CANYON VIEWPOINTS
With the entrance to the Fish River Canyon Park at Hobas, this is the ideal
place to stay if you want to take sunset pictures over the canyon. The Fish
River Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the world and the biggest in Africa,
therefore all opportunities for photography must be explored.
The main viewpoint is about 10km from Hobas Lodge and Campsite, making
this the ideal spot to stay at to explore the whole area. You can walk along
the edge of the canyon and take in the beautiful views. Only the hikers
that partake in the 5 - 6-day hiking trail is allowed to hike down the canyon,
so please do not attempt the descent if you didn't sign up for the 5-day
hike.
It is likely that small antelope like klipspringer or springbok or even
mountain zebra may be seen towards the canyon.
Refreshing swimming pools are available at Hobas Lodge and Camp for cooling
off at the end of a hot but exciting day at the canyon.
